Switzerland is closer to Essen than the map suggests. Düsseldorf airport is 30 minutes from our office; Zurich is about an hour in the air from there and Geneva an hour and a quarter. Basel sits on the direct ICE route from Cologne, roughly five hours from Essen with the equipment as luggage, and Bern is an hour by train from either. For one show day we fly in the evening before; for two or three days the hotel and flight become a small share of the total.
The VAT position is the simplest of all our destinations. Switzerland is outside the EU, so a Swiss company receives a net invoice from Pixer GmbH without German VAT. We quote and invoice in euro at the German package prices, €990, €1,490 and €1,990, with no currency line to negotiate. EU exhibitors with a VAT ID are invoiced under the reverse-charge procedure, and companies from the Gulf, Asia or the United States showing in Switzerland are invoiced net as well.
Many exhibitors at Swiss shows are also in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt or Munich in the same year. One crew with one shot list and colour grade keeps the material consistent, and the stand (booth) looks the same in your annual report whether it stood in Oerlikon or on the Rhine.
Messe Basel stands at Messeplatz in Kleinbasel, ten minutes by tram from Basel SBB, and its main hall by Herzog & de Meuron is some of the most photogenic architecture at any European venue. Swissbau, the construction fair, runs in January in alternating years and Art Basel fills the halls every June. Because Basel borders Germany and France, it is the Swiss venue most often combined with a German show in one trip.
Messe Zürich in Oerlikon is a few minutes by S-Bahn from the main station and about ten from the airport; Giardina in March and Swiss-Moto in February are its best-known public dates alongside a steady run of professional fairs. Palexpo in Geneva stands directly beside the airport, joined by a covered walkway, the easiest venue in Europe for a same-day arrival; Watches and Wonders in April and EBACE, the business-aviation show, are its landmark weeks.
BERNEXPO lies in the Wankdorf district beside the stadium and the Wankdorf railway station and hosts BEA, the large spring consumer fair, along with Suisse Public and professional shows for the capital region. Photo rules at all four venues follow the German pattern: your own stand, staff and products may be photographed freely, visitors in close-up are asked first.
