The venue

How Koelnmesse is laid out

Koelnmesse sits in Deutz on the right bank of the Rhine, facing the old town and the cathedral. According to the venue, the exhibition space is spread over 11 connected halls, plus around 100,000 m² of outdoor area, two congress centres and the new Confex conference and exhibition centre. Because the halls are linked, even appointments far apart can be reached on foot within one show day, provided the routes are known in advance.

Several halls have more than one level. The number after the dot is the floor: Hall 11.3 is the third level of Hall 11, not a separate building. That matters for planning, because two stands in the same hall can be separated by escalators and a detour. We always ask for hall, level and stand number and plan routes with equipment accordingly.

The Koelnmesse site plan shows the North, South, East and West entrances plus a separate Confex entrance. Congress Centre North and Congress Centre East sit directly next to the halls. Which entrance is closest to your stand depends on how your show uses the halls; we set the meeting point and schedule from there.

Access and rules

Getting there, getting in and the permit for photo and film

Few German fairgrounds are this well connected by rail. Köln Messe/Deutz station sits right at the grounds, with stops for ICE and IC trains and the S-Bahn lines S6, S11, S12 and S19. Lines 1 and 9 stop at Messe/Deutz station, lines 3 and 4 at the Koelnmesse stop for the East, West and North entrances. From the grounds the S-Bahn runs directly to Cologne Bonn Airport, which makes Koelnmesse easy for teams flying in. By car you reach it via the motorway and the Zoobrücke car park. We drive in from Essen; travel is included in every package.

The Koelnmesse house and ground regulations are stricter than at some other venues. Photography, filming and video recording for commercial purposes require the prior written authorisation of Koelnmesse. Where stands or products of other exhibitors or persons are involved, the prior written permission of the rights holder is needed as well. Koelnmesse may set further rules, for example in the exhibitor manual of your show.

In practice: apply for the permission for our shoot in good time before the show, through your event documents. We give you names, days and scope of the production. We do not deliberately photograph neighbouring stands or other brands’ products, and recognisable visitors only with consent. During the show everyone in the halls needs a valid ticket or pass, so please plan two or three exhibitor passes for our crew.

Our kit is compact and fits on one trolley: cameras, lenses, battery lights, wireless audio and stands. We need neither a power connection nor storage space on your stand. Anything larger, such as a second camera for a stage recording, we agree in advance with you and your stand builder.

Shot list

What we shoot, when and where

Clean stand shots happen before the doors open, while the aisles are empty. In that window we shoot overviews from several angles, product and graphic details and the team. Then we switch to conversations, tastings and demos on your stand (booth), without interrupting your meetings.

Cologne’s shows are very different from each other. At gamescom the halls fill fast, it is loud and the stage shows are bright and full of movement; we work with a shotgun microphone and short interview windows. Anuga is about food and many national pavilions, which calls for appetising close-ups and people with the product. At imm cologne, ORGATEC and interzum it is furniture, materials and spaces, so calm architectural images with straight lines. At IDS we show dental equipment in use, at ISM packaging and new products.

Before the show we only need a few things from you: the stand plan or a rendering, the products that must be in the pictures, the names of the people for interviews and fixed slots such as press meetings or a product launch. From that we write a plan per day that fits on one page. At big shows like Anuga or gamescom we deliberately place interviews in quieter windows so that sound and background work.

Interviews are recorded in a quiet corner of your stand with a lavalier microphone and our own light. Our editors cut the 30-second highlight video and the vertical clips in parallel, so you can post while the show is still on.

Calendar

Typical shows and seasons in Cologne

After dmexco in September, ORGATEC and idd cologne follow in October 2026, ART COLOGNE in November. January is busy in Cologne: imm cologne, spoga horse and ISM run almost back to back. INTERMOT and Anuga FoodTec come in February, IDS in March, FIBO and h+h cologne in April. interzum follows in May 2027, spoga+gafa in June, gamescom in August, Kind + Jugend in September and Anuga, FSB and aquanale in October 2027.

Several of these shows run every second year, including Anuga, interzum and ORGATEC. The images from one edition then have to last until the next, for website, catalogues, distributor decks and LinkedIn. That is where the Full Day package with interviews and the 90-second film pays off. For the big weeks we suggest asking four to six weeks ahead.

Many exhibitors in Cologne travel from abroad, especially for Anuga, ISM and IDS. We work in English, German, Arabic and Farsi and add subtitles on request. Companies outside the EU are invoiced without German VAT; EU companies with a VAT ID receive a reverse-charge invoice. Because Cologne is in North Rhine-Westphalia there is no travel line, and multi-day coverage splits easily into a full first day and shorter follow-up blocks.

FAQ

Questions exhibitors ask about Koelnmesse

Do we need a permit for photo and video on our own stand at Koelnmesse?

The house and ground regulations require prior written authorisation from Koelnmesse for commercial photography, filming and video. We give you names, days and scope so you can apply in time.

May you photograph neighbouring stands or visitors?

Other stands and products need the rights holder’s permission, so we do not shoot them deliberately. Recognisable visitors only with consent.

What does a trade fair photographer at Koelnmesse cost?

Basic €990 for two hours, Professional €1,490 for four hours, Full Day €1,990 for eight hours, all plus VAT. Travel is included.

What does Hall 10.2 mean?

The number after the dot is the level. Hall 10.2 is the second level of Hall 10, so always send us hall, level and stand number.

When do we receive the photos and video?

Within 24 hours after the show day ends, first photos usually the same day.

Do we have to pay German VAT?

Non-EU companies are invoiced without German VAT. EU companies with a VAT ID receive a reverse-charge invoice.
